Since its founding in 1976 by Alfred and Hanna Fromm, the Fromm Institute has encouraged individuals aged 50 and older from all walks of life to engage in academic pursuits. As a "University within a University" on the University of San Francisco campus, the Institute offers daytime courses taught by emeritus professors, providing intellectual stimulation and a wide range of college-level learning opportunities. Committed to fostering a peer learning environment, the Fromm Institute welcomes everyone, regardless of prior academic experience or financial capability, and relies on both modest membership fees and philanthropic support to sustain its mission. Beyond education, the Institute recognizes the significant mental and health benefits of adult learning, helping older adults stay mentally active, socially engaged, and better equipped to manage the challenges of aging. This San Francisco original serves hundreds of older students daily, creating a vibrant community of lifelong learners.

Please join us at to the Fromm Institute Gather Together event on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, from 10 am to 12 pm, in Fromm Hall on the University of San Francisco campus. This event is an excellent opportunity for you to meet with our Session faculty and learn about the diverse range of courses offered. Whether you are interested in fine arts, current events, political science or literature, our faculty members are passionate about sharing their knowledge and expertise with you. Catch up with your fellow Frommies or meet some new ones. You can also obtain your USF student ID card, learn about the Fromm Institute Student Association (FISA) and other resources available to you as a Fromm Institute student.

Membership fees collected cover just over half of our program costs. As an independent non-profit at USF, the Fromm Institute reimburses the University of San Francisco for the use of all campus resources. We rely on the generous financial support of the community.
